Our boat trips are our main scheduled volunteer trips, however as the need arises due to an increase in predator numbers in the area, or an expected beech mast season we will run extra trips in an effort to combat the pests.
Volunteers for these trips will need to be seasoned trampers, able to cope in all weather conditions, be physically fit and have a full range of gear suitable for the conditions.
These trips transport will be fly in and fly out by helicopter, currently ex Orawia and will be 4-5 days in duration, or on some occasions fly in/out on the same day.
Your accommodation will be in the DOC huts on the mainland, namely the historic Oil Store and the Te Oneroa A frame, or on Coal Island at the bivvy, however you maybe required to use your own tent. You will need to supply your own food, we will supply all safety equipment e.g. handheld radios, EPIRB and first aid kits.
The cost for these trips is $850 per person, to cover cost, paid to the Coal Island Trust – South West NZ Endangered Species Charitable Trust, and is to be paid in full before departure.
